Free workshops for West Yorkshire creative industry businesses and entrepreneurs set to launch

Leeds Media Centre in Chapeltown will be the venue over the coming weeks for a series of free workshops to support businesses and entrepreneurs in the creative industries across West Yorkshire.

Unity Enterprise (UE), in partnership with the Black Business Consortium West Yorkshire, is hosting events which focus on three areas: branding and marketing, artificial intelligence (AI) and sales.

The branding and marketing workshop – which will take place on 14 May and again on 4 June and 2 July - will provide participants with insights on how to develop a compelling brand identity, learn SEO and social media techniques, and master digital content marketing strategies.  

The Artificial Intelligence for Creatives session – scheduled for 21 May, 18 June and 9 July - will help entrepreneurs integrate AI into their workflows, automate repetitive tasks, and develop their own AI tools and apps.

The sales workshop – being held on 11 and 25 June – will focus on customer relationships and sales skills that convert, with a focus on value-based selling.

Leeds Media Centre is one of three business locations in Chapeltown managed by UE, the not for profit subsidiary of BME housing association Unity Homes and Enterprise.

Bristol nursery with ‘happy and confident’ children impresses Ofsted inspectors

Partou Little Big Steps Nursery and Pre-school in Bristol has been rated ‘Good’ in all areas by Ofsted.

In their adjudication, the inspectors write: “Parents report their children love coming to the nursery and have grown in confidence since attending.”

Partou Little Big Steps Nursery and Pre-school in Bristol has received a ‘Good’ rating from Ofsted.

Located in The Park Centre on Daventry Road, the modern, purpose-built setting serves families principally from the Filwood Park and Knowle areas of the city.

The nursery is full of bright, spacious playrooms complemented by well-equipped, safe outdoor areas for the children to explore.

In reaching their judgement, the Ofsted inspectors observed the quality of education provided, both indoors and outdoors, and assessed the impact this was having on children's learning.

They also spoke to parents and team members, joined Nursery Manager Bev Wells on a learning walk around the facilities, and accompanied her in observing a group activity.

“Children are happy and confident in the nursery environment,” the final report notes.  “Staff have good relationships with children that enable them to feel safe and secure. They provide children with a learning environment that is centred around their needs.”

The inspectors praise Partou Little Big Steps for developing and delivering “a curriculum that promotes children's independence and confidence to ensure children are ready for their next stage of learning.”  They continue: “All children show high levels of confidence and engage with play for extended periods.”

The report adds: “Staff promote children's language and communication at every opportunity.”

The inspectors highlight that team members are “well supported by the provider and receive regular opportunities to discuss their health and wellbeing, as well as their training needs and workload.”

And safeguarding arrangements at the setting are deemed to be “effective.” The report says: “There is an open and positive culture around safeguarding that puts children's interests first.”

Manningham Housing Association achieves Northern Housing Awards double

Manningham Housing Association (MHA) has triumphed in two categories at the Northern Housing Awards 2025.

The BME organisation - which manages more than 1,400 homes for over 6,000 residents in Bradford and Keighley - won the blue riband Landlord of the Year award at a prizegiving ceremony at Emirates Old Trafford in Manchester, with MHA Customer Panel member Tausif Mohammed named Tenant of the Year.

The association’s recently completed £4.3 million Odette’s Point development in Keighley was also shortlisted for Best Affordable Housing Development (Up to £5million), with its Neighbourhood Services team a finalist in the Northern Housing Team of the Year category.

On reaching their decision to award the prestigious Landlord of the Year title to MHA, the judges said they believed the association provided “an eclectic range of services to tenants that is unparalleled in the sector.”

They continued: “This was a very strong submission with innovation and research in amongst great customer experience, all qualities that are highly respected in any landlord organisation.”

And the judges described Tausif Mohammed, the Tenant of the Year, as "absolutely inspiring!"

They commented: “He has a massive impact on a wide range of people in his community, and his efforts deserve to be recognised.  Tausif was described by one judge as an excellent community activist and role model for young people, and one of our judges even asked us to publicly pass on their thanks to him.”

“Being singled out as the north of England’s leading landlord is a remarkable feat and should be a source of great pride for everyone connected with the MHA family.

Tenant survey shows Leeds Jewish Housing Association reaching new heights

Leeds Jewish Housing Association (LJHA) has achieved a customer satisfaction rating of 82.9%, an increase of 13.5% from 2024, after an all-tenant survey.

In April 2023, the Regulator of Social Housing introduced new requirements for social housing providers to ask residents 12 standardised questions annually.

Known as Tenant Satisfaction Measures (TSMs), these cover numerous aspects of the tenant experience such as the quality of homes, response time to complaints, anti-social behaviour, repairs and maintenance, home safety, communications and cleanliness.

LJHA’s results, which have just been published, show that it had surpassed the sector average across all 12 categories and been ranked in the top quartile in nine TSMs.

Home safety had the highest rating with 89.2% of LJHA residents declaring that they felt secure in their property.    

87.5% of tenants said they believed LJHA was making a positive contribution to their neighbourhood, with 87.3% agreeing that the association treated them fairly and respectfully.

Other stand-out ratings included 83% of residents replying that they were kept well informed by the association, 82.1% feeling that communal areas were clean and 80.1% stating that their home was well-maintained.  

Respondents were also invited to submit anonymous comments about LJHA’s performance.

One wrote: “I do feel that they take good care of the tenants, and the houses are nice.”

Another replied: “If I ever need anything doing, they are straight on with it.”

A third said: “It is very easy to reach out to them and they are always here to help anyone.”

And a fourth commented: “They’re good whenever I need them.  They are efficient, they’re good at getting back to me.”

Mark Grandfield, LJHA Chief Executive, said: “TSMs are designed to allow tenants to scrutinise their landlord’s performance, provide insights on where we might improve services, and act as a source of intelligence for the regulator on how we are meeting new consumer standards.

“I am thrilled that not only has LJHA scored above the sector average in all 12 areas in which tenants were invited to give their opinions, but the individual percentages have risen in every category in comparison with last year’s results.

“With an overall satisfaction rating of almost 83%, the association is making excellent progress as we prepare to start construction work on our new 28-home Queenshill development which is due for completion next year.”

Partou nursery serving Bracknell and Wokingham families impresses Ofsted

Partou Children’s House Day Nursery and Pre-school in Binfield has been awarded a ‘Good’ rating in all areas of activity after an Ofsted inspection.

Set in a detached Edwardian mansion surrounded by two acres of land just a mile from Bracknell and Wokingham, the nursery’s facilities have been optimised for fun-filled educational activities both inside and outside.

Its exciting indoor environment includes a nursery gym, indoor climbing frame and play areas for all ages.  Meanwhile, its attractive outdoor space features a large sandpit, sensory gardens, mud kitchens and more for the children to explore.

In her report, the Ofsted inspector describes Partou Children’s House team members as “warm, kind and caring.”  

The inspector notes that “children benefit from plenty of fresh air and exercise.” She continues: “They develop and practise their physical skills as they ride on tricycles, run around, jump and explore the outdoor space. Staff help children learn to manage risks for themselves as they build obstacle courses out of wooden planks and balance along them. This develops children's problem-solving and creative skills.”

Amy Bennett, Partou Children’s House Nursery Manager, is singled out for having “an accurate overview of the quality of the nursery” and demonstrating “a drive for continual improvement alongside the management team.” The inspector adds: “Leaders make effective use of funding to support children's development needs. They have used it to provide appropriate resources and support for individual children.”

The team is praised for their collective efforts to “encourage children to be independent and learn skills for the future” and for promoting “good hygiene procedures” that “help children understand the importance of healthy eating.”

Partnership working between team members and families also meet with Ofsted approval.  The report explains: “Parents praise the nursery and staff. They are updated regularly on their children's development. Staff support them in how they can continue their children's learning at home.”

And the safeguarding culture at the nursery is deemed to be “open and positive” that “puts children's interests first.”

‘Caring and stimulating’ Bradford nursery wins Ofsted approval

Partou Woodlands House Day Nursery and Pre-school in Bradford has been rated ‘Good’ in all areas by Ofsted.

Situated next to the local park on Cross Road and close to main road links into Leeds, Bradford and Harrogate, it is a popular choice for families in Idle, Simpson Green and Thackley.

In her official report, the Ofsted inspector praises team members for warmly welcoming “parents, carers and children into this caring and stimulating nursery.”   

She writes: “Children attend settling-in sessions that meet their emotional and personal needs. Staff support children to learn how to recognise and name their emotions. Children register their name each day under the emotion that they are feeling. This promotes children's understanding of their sense of self and helps staff to know more about the children that they care for. As a result, children feel safe and emotionally secure. They become happy and confident learners.”

The Partou Woodlands House team’s efforts to encourage children to be active impressed the inspector.  “Staff play alongside children to support them to remain fully engaged in their play,” she observes.  “Children take part in forest-school sessions and football classes that are taught by external teachers and coaches. This provides children with opportunities to learn new skills and take part in new and different experiences.”

The work by team members to promote strong relationships with families is recognised in the Ofsted report: “They invite parents to attend stay-and-play sessions, charity events and craft fairs at the nursery. This fosters a sense of belonging and community for families.”

Support for children with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND) also attracts praise, including the team’s ongoing engagement with external agencies.  “They receive specialist advice and training about their role in supporting children with SEND,” the inspector notes.  “This ensures that children with SEND continue to receive good levels of support.”

And the safeguarding arrangements at the setting meet with full approval, with the report stating: “There is an open and positive culture around safeguarding that puts children's interests first.”

Unity Homes and Enterprise invites applications for Chair and Board positions

Leeds-based BME housing association Unity Homes and Enterprise is recruiting a new Chair and Board members.

Unity was formed in 1987 with the aim of building a strong BME community housing association to meet the urgent housing needs of black and minority ethnic communities in the city.

The initial focus was on Chapeltown, but this widened to other areas of Leeds including Harehills, Beeston, Holbeck, Chapel Allerton and Pudsey, and more recently to Kirklees.

With a turnover of £6.8 million and an annual investment in new and existing homes of around £6.5 million, Unity currently manages almost 1,400 properties for tenants from all communities and ethnic backgrounds.

In 2000 the association established its not-for-profit subsidiary company, Unity Enterprise, to support local entrepreneurial activity.  It now provides 142 affordable business units for more than 80 diverse businesses across three centres in Leeds.  Collectively, these organisations employ more than 1,200 people. 

Working alongside housing officers, Unity’s Employment Services team helps unemployed people in hard-to-reach communities to find jobs, access training and education opportunities or work as a community volunteer.

Manningham Housing Association retains world-leading position on diversity and inclusion

Manningham Housing Association (MHA) has again met the global Standard for Diversity and Inclusion in HR Management – building on its unique status as the first housing association in the world to achieve it.

ISO 30415 is an internationally recognised certification that endorses exemplary practices in diversity and inclusion within organisations.

The accolade is awarded after a comprehensive assessment, including on-site evaluations and extensive discussions with employees and stakeholders.

It was first bestowed on MHA in 2023 and, following as assessment review earlier this year, it has been confirmed that the Bradford-based BME housing association continues to meet the requirements.

In his final report, John Mulholland from the Centre for Assessment – an accredited certification body – describes MHA as “a good place to work” and “a good example for diversity in the workplace.”

He praises the association, which owns and manages more than 1,400 affordable homes for over 6,000 residents in Bradford and Keighley, for “fostering an inclusive culture where people from a wide variety of backgrounds can be themselves at work and are encouraged to give their best at work.”

He continues: “Diversity and inclusion are deeply embedded in policies and staff practices and as a result people described a family like working environment.”

Mr Mulholland also references several examples of MHA’s work to champion inclusiveness such as embracing the LGBTQ+ Housing Pledge, producing a new Equality, Diversity and Inclusion strategy, using digital innovation and AI to improve accessibility to services, and working effectively with external partners to extend its range of services and housing provision.    

He adds: “The recent appointment of three female members onto the leadership team offers not just additional skill sets and perspectives but also serves as an example to others of pathways to success.”

“I want to thank the assessor for the professional approach he took throughout the process, and for appreciating the deeply held values and principles that Manningham Housing Association represents.”

Bidston nursery and forest school praised by Ofsted inspector

Partou Park Wood Day Nursery and Forest School in Bidston has achieved a ‘Good’ rating in all areas following an Ofsted inspection.

In the final report, team members at the setting are described as “warm and friendly” who “promote children's behaviour well.”

The inspector writes: “They set high expectations for children's behaviour and use praise to motivate children in their play. Staff follow effective strategies that help older children to reflect on their behaviour and understand how their behaviour impacts others.”

The nursery is praised for providing a curriculum which is “ambitious for all children, including those with special educational needs and/or disabilities.”

The report continues: “All children have a positive attitude towards their learning and make good progress. Staff liaise closely with outside agencies and implement consistent and effective strategies to support children. The setting uses additional funding to ensure that disadvantaged children have access to all activities and have any additional help that they need.”

Sited on Eleanor Road, Partou Park Wood provides a unique forest school nursery experience for almost 100 children aged 0-4 in Bidston, Noctorum, Oxton and surrounding areas.

The setting combines woodland-themed soft playrooms with exciting outdoor areas including obstacle courses, sensory gardens, planting patches and even a nursery beehive.

“Children have lots of opportunities to have fresh air and exercise and to develop their physical skills,” the inspector notes. “The designated large indoor soft playroom provides ample opportunities for children to develop their gross motor skills. Staff working with babies use this area to continue to support babies' confidence in crawling and climbing. Staff help children progressively develop their physical skills. For example, providing ample opportunities for children to enhance their running, balancing and coordination skills outdoors.”

Partnerships between team members and families are hailed as “a strength of the nursery.”  The report explains: "Parents speak highly of the caring staff and the diverse range of learning experiences their children receive. They are extremely appreciative of the care and support they and their children receive. Parents state that their children are happy to attend and have improved their communication skills and confidence since attending.”

The Ofsted inspector remarks that Partou Park Wood team members can develop their knowledge and skills through a variety of training opportunities. She writes: “Staff say that the open-door policy in the nursery means that any concerns they have are dealt with promptly. Staff well-being is promoted, and morale across the nursery is high.”

And the safeguarding culture at the setting is defined as “open and positive” that “puts children’s interests first.”

“We believe that embracing natural environments is a great way for children to develop a range of skills, which is why the local woodlands and community farm play such a key role in our everyday activities.

Partou Playtime Day Nursery and Pre-school in Shepperton has been rated ‘Good’ in all areas following an Ofsted inspection.

In the official report, which has just been released, the inspector praises team members for forming strong bonds with the children and supporting their emotional wellbeing.

“Staff gather information from parents when children first start, which helps them settle quickly,” she observes.  “Staff know their key children well. This helps staff to plan what children need to learn next and supports children to achieve and make progress in their development.”

Partou Playtime’s curriculum also impressed the inspector, who describes it as “well sequenced” and reflecting “each child's unique needs.” She writes: “Staff know their key children's needs well, including those with SEND, and children make sound progress from their starting points. Children's home backgrounds are reflected well, including other languages they hear or speak at home. This helps children to feel valued.”

Partnerships between the nursery and families are “strong” with information shared from home “used effectively by staff to support children's learning.”

And the setting’s safeguarding culture is defined as “open and positive” and putting “children's interests first.”

Within easy reach of Shepperton town centre and Shepperton railway station, Partou Playtime is filled with fun, educational resources that stimulate children’s creativity and encourage their natural development.

The setting also includes a huge soft play area with three levels of challenging obstacles which support the development of physical skills, together with an enclosed garden area equipped with climbing frames, mud kitchens and sensory gardens.

The Partou Pyjama Party will see team members and children spend an entire day wearing pyjamas, sharing teddies, playing games, making popcorn and reading stories to support the vital hospice services which benefit so many local families.  

Taking place on Tuesday 29 April, the venture is the brainchild of Bambi Wainwright, Nursery Manager at Partou Little Dragons on East Parade.

She said: “The hospice is so close to our hearts as one of my team’s mums was looked after there.

“She goes back every year to light a candle and will be forever grateful for the care and support the family was given.”

Toni, a team member at Partou Woodlands Harrogate on Wetherby Road, is also deeply grateful to the hospice, 

She said: “St Michael’s also means a lot to me personally after their incredible support when I unfortunately lost my father-in-law on 21 March 2024.

“Richard was diagnosed with cancer on his brain. Unfortunately this became terminal, and he started to deteriorate quickly. Richard went into the hospice a week before he sadly passed away.

“When Richard was in the hospice, the staff made sure he was as comfortable as possible and were incredible looking after him. As he wasn’t very alert, the staff still spent their time talking to him and keeping him company when myself, his son and his wife were not with him. The volunteers at the hospice were also incredible, they often put fresh flowers in his room which we know he would have loved.

“The staff were so caring and friendly to all of us when visiting Richard, and the support after he had passed away was amazing. We will never be able to thank St Michael's enough for everything they did for Richard and us as a family.”

Free Leeds business start-up training programme set for relaunch

Places are filling up fast for a free course designed to equip aspiring entrepreneurs in Leeds with the knowledge and confidence to start and build their own business.

Organised by Unity Enterprise (UE), the not for profit subsidiary of BME housing association Unity Homes and Enterprise, Steps to Business is a series of eight two-hour workshops using non-conventional training methods.

The course – which can be completed full-time over four days or part-time over eight weeks - provides fun and interactive learning resources, plus access to business mentors, coaches and advisers. 

At the conclusion, there is an opportunity for participants to pitch their business idea to real investors.

Steps to Business was launched by UE in February 2023 and has run several times since.

UE is particularly keen to encourage social housing tenants to sign up for the course, with a special emphasis on Unity Homes and Enterprise tenants.

Someone who successfully completed the programme is Saskia Fishley, a Unity Homes and Enterprise housing tenant and owner of O’Fishley Baked.

Established in May 2018, O’Fishley Baked is a collection service based in Leeds offering a range of bakes such as cupcakes, cakes, loaf cakes, cheesecake, brownies, blondies and cookies.

Saskia said: “I have been baking since I was seven years old.  When I decided to turn my hobby into a business, I used a play on the word ‘officially’ and her surname to create the company name.

Final countdown to 72 hole challenge in support of Coleraine Grammar School’s South African adventure

There are just a few days to go until former Ulster and Ireland captain Rory Best, Ulster and Ireland legend Jonny Bell, Coleraine Grammar School Head of Sport Richard Beggs and CEO of Tenth Revolution James Lloyd-Townshend take to the tee at Royal Portrush Golf Club to play 72 holes to raise money to support Coleraine Grammar School’s rugby tour to South Africa.

The four men will play two rounds each of the Dunluce Links and the Valley Links on Monday 14 April.

Jonny said: “I’m delighted to help raise funds for Coleraine Grammar School’s tour of South Africa.

“Visiting different countries and cultures is what makes touring so special, and it doesn’t get much better than South Africa, a country steeped in rugby tradition.”

James said: “When Richard first mentioned the challenge, I jumped at the opportunity to help raise some money to give the boys what will be a life changing experience.

“There’s nothing quite like a rugby tour, and particularly in such a beautiful place like South Africa.”

Richard – who played with Jonny and James for Coleraine Inst 1st XV in the 1991 Ulster Schools’ Cup Final – explained that the money raised would ensure that cost would not be barrier for the young players selected to travel to the homeland of the reigning Rugby World Cup champions.  

He said: “South Africa is the ultimate rugby tour and will be a life-changing experience for all involved.

“When putting the tour together, the school was determined that no one would miss out because of finances.  The funding we are seeking to raise is intended to make the trip affordable for all.

“I am so grateful to Rory, Jonny and James for giving up their time to take part in an arduous challenge for a magnificent cause.

“I hope anyone with links to the school, who are part of the rugby community or just want to support this ground-breaking venture will feel able to make a donation.”

Leeds housing association in the running for two Northern Housing Awards

Unity Homes and Enterprise is in contention for two prizes at the Northern Housing Awards 2025.

The BME housing association, which manages almost 1,400 properties for tenants in Leeds and Kirklees, has been shortlisted for Best Customer Experience with the judges adjudicating on “organisations that are placing excellent customer experience front and centre of their operations.”

Meanwhile, its not for profit subsidiary, Unity Enterprise (UE) - which is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year – is a finalist for SME of the Year which is open to “small or medium enterprises operating within the housing sector that have performed exceptionally well over the past 12 months.”

Manningham Housing Association shortlisted for four Northern Housing Awards

Manningham Housing Association (MHA) has been shortlisted in four categories for the Northern Housing Awards 2025, including Landlord of the Year.  

Other prizes the Bradford-based BME association is in the running for include its Neighbourhood Services team making the cut for Northern Housing Team of the Year, and MHA Customer Panel member Tausif Mohammed being one of four finalists for Tenant of the Year.

Completing the quadruple of successes is the Odette’s Point scheme in Keighley being shortlisted for Best Affordable Housing Development (Up to £5million).

Lee Bloomfield, MHA Chief Executive, commented: “Being shortlisted for a single Northern Housing Awards is an achievement in itself, but being in the final reckoning for four is stunning.

“We often talk about the ‘MHA family.’  Everyone involved with what we do - tenants, staff, board members, project partners and the wider neighbourhoods in Bradford and Keighley where we operate – should feel a real sense of pride at this outcome.

MPs back new report promoting ‘Healthy Hearts’ across the nation

A collection of articles from University of Manchester experts which provides a roadmap to tackle the national cardiovascular health crisis has been warmly received in Westminster.

‘Healthy Hearts’ incorporates academic research on cardiovascular disease (CVD) which now results in someone’s death in the UK every three minutes.

In her foreword for the report published by Policy@Manchester, the Chief Executive of the British Heart Foundation, Dr Charmaine Griffiths, warns that CVD is now one of the country’s biggest killers, “tearing families apart and causing untold heartbreak to far too many.”

She adds: “In the last half a century, huge strides have been made to halve the number of people dying from heart and circulatory diseases in the UK each year. But worryingly, this progress is now at risk.”

‘Healthy Hearts’ covers a plethora of issues pertinent to cardiovascular health, from heart disease in cancer survivors, to the effects of air pollution on heart health.  It also includes an international perspective on the impact of cardiovascular deaths in developing countries around the world.

After reading the document, Labour MP Dr Simon Opher, a former GP and now Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Health Group, believes that ‘Healthy Hearts’ should prompt policymakers to address the threat of CVD.

“Wes Streeting, the Health Secretary, has said we need to switch our medical care from cure to prevention,” he observes. “The ‘Healthy Hearts’ report shows exactly why. Making better use of digital technologies and predictive tools could prevent many deaths from cardiovascular disease. The science is well known and yet currently in our NHS this isn’t being done.”

Liberal Democrat MP Layla Moran, Chair of the House of Commons Health and Social Care Committee, notes the recommendations in ‘Health Hearts’ on the use of NHS health checks.

“As this report states, health checks often fail to reach the people who might benefit most,” she comments.  “This chimes with evidence we heard in our session on progress in preventing CVD. We were concerned to hear that rates of uptake of health checks vary widely and we have called on the Government to improve monitoring to track the uptake of checks. We want to see concrete action to drive improved uptake amongst people at high risk.”

Her party colleague Helen Morgan, the MP for North Shropshire and Liberal Democrat Spokesperson for Health and Care, also welcomes the University of Manchester report, seeing it as a valuable guide that the Government should not ignore.

“Focusing on prevention will boost health and boost the economy,” she says. “Tackling pollution and reducing the burden of expensive treatment should be an important priority for any country and I hope the Government will carefully consider the ‘Healthy Hearts’ proposals.”

This is an approach endorsed by Dr Opher MP – a view sure to be taken seriously by Ministers, given his almost three decades of first-hand experience in general practice.  

“I believe it is time to target our strategy on prevention, as well as modifying our environment to improve health,” he argues. “We need clean air, we need a healthy diet to lower obesity, and we need to test the people who are most at risk. This will prevent more death and disability from CVD.”

‘Social prescriptions’ can help young people through mental health challenges – new research

The use of ‘social prescriptions’ to improve children and young people’s wellbeing without medication can strengthen government policy on mental health support, University of Manchester researchers have found.

In an article published by Policy@Manchester, Ruth Farrimond-Goff and Professor Caroline Bond highlight recent data from the World Health Organisation which suggests that one in seven people globally aged 10-19 years experience a diagnosable mental health condition.

But they point out that whilst ‘social prescribing’ - providing a link worker or community navigator to prescribe a social/community-based care package - can support adults to address social and emotional needs, it is not yet commonly deployed for children and young people in the UK.

To learn more about the implications of embedding social prescribing within the education sector, the researchers reviewed a pilot scheme undertaken in a large Combined Authority in the North West of England.

“We wanted to know if social prescribing is a beneficial alternative method and preventative mechanism for boosting young people’s mental health and wellbeing through engagement with activities,” Farrimond-Goff and Bond write.  “We also wanted to assess how it is working with on-site link workers in relation to supporting college aged young people’s mental health.” The link worker helps the young person to consider their strengths and interests, identifies an appropriate activity and then supports them to connect with it.

From their findings, they conclude: “It was evident that the need for.”    They add: “We found that the link worker role was pivotal to the success of the project. The students talked about the link workers being a ‘listening ear’ and supportive, as well as providing advice and guidance.”

In their article, the University of Manchester researchers note that, in its ‘Break down barriers to opportunity’ mission, the government has identified poor mental health as a barrier to learning. “They have pledged to provide access to specialist mental health professionals in every school, so every young person has access to early support ‘to address problems before they escalate,” Farrimond-Goff and Bond write. “We recommend that social prescribing link workers be integrated into this strategy and are a key part of the workforce of school mental health professionals.”

They continue: “Barnardo’s has called for universal mental health support in schools through ‘a national strategy for social prescribing for children and young people.’  Our research supports this call.”

The academics also advise that social prescribing has been identified in the NHS Long Term Plan as becoming a universal service covering all age groups, “thus implying that this mainly adult focussed intervention would be available to under 18s.”  

Through their study, Farrimond-Goff and Bond pinpoint several “facilitators and barriers” if such an extension of social prescribing to lower age groups is to achieve optimum impact.

“The key facilitator was having a dedicated in-house link worker with the main barriers being a lack of budget, time and community access,” they explain.  “As government have undertaken to provide mental health support in schools and introduce a network of ‘Young Futures hubs,’ we advocate for a national social prescribing strategy to be integrated into the development of and budget for these plans.

“Finally, we found that listening to young people and being aware of student choice is important when considering the range of activities on offer when delivering social prescribing. Education policymakers developing strategies and interventions should ensure that there are ample consultation opportunities so that the views of young people, educators and mental health professionals can be taken into account.”

Unity Enterprise plays host to ‘inspiring’ International Women’s Day event

Unity Enterprise, the not for profit subsidiary of Leeds-based BME housing association Unity Homes and Enterprise, was proud to host an unforgettable International Women’s Day weekend event, bringing together more than 60 women from the Chapeltown community.

Organised by Beverley Brown of Ebony Milestone, the Preloved Fashion Collective Launch was a special two-day gathering to celebrate, connect and empower women through sustainable fashion.

The event was held at Leeds Media Centre, one of three business centres managed by Unity Enterprise, which provides affordable units for 93 diverse businesses employing over 1,200 people locally.

Beverley Brown said: “The event was more than just a celebration—it was a space for women to network, share experiences, and embrace the power of preloved fashion.

“Over 60 incredible women came together to celebrate togetherness, sustainable style, and ethical African-inspired fashion—all whilst embracing the power of preloved fashion.

“Through engaging discussions and styling sessions, we explored how sustainable fashion choices can positively impact both our personal style and the environment.

“The event was a true reflection of women supporting women, style with purpose, and the beauty of community.

“A huge thank you to Unity Enterprise for supporting this initiative and championing community engagement.

“Seeing so many women connect, learn, and uplift each other was truly inspiring.”

Senior peer backs Coleraine Football Club’s ground funding bid

Ulster Unionist peer Lord Rogan has endorsed Coleraine Football Club’s £10 million funding application to transform The Showgrounds into The North West Community Stadium.

Speaking from Westminster earlier today, the former House of Lords Deputy Speaker said: “I have been privileged to visit Coleraine Football Club to meet officials and be kept up to speed on the ground improvement plans.

“The attention to detail is deeply impressive, as is the fact that these plans are shovel ready and construction workers can be on site as soon as the funds are released.

“The catchment area is huge and many different communities around the North Coast will benefit from the new facilities if the club’s bid is successful.

“I have lived most of my life in Belfast, but I recognise the incredible work put in to place the club at the head of the queue.

“I was happy to publicly support the club’s efforts to secure monies from the Levelling Up Fund under the previous UK Government and raised the matter in Parliament several times.  I continue to believe it was a travesty that this bid was not successful.

“However, it is now time for these plans to be transformed into reality through the Northern Ireland Football Fund.  I hope the powers that be are listening and finally give Coleraine Football Club the ability to deliver the ground the area deserves.”
